This project creates critical habitat for shoreline nesting birds.
In 2024, the state-funded Love Our Lakes program delivered a complex sand renourishment project on islands in the Gippsland Lakes. The project involving Gippsland Ports, Parks Victoria, BirdLife Australia and Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation improved areas of shoreline by depositing sand to restore critical beach nesting and shorebird habitat.
Up to five hectares of island shoreline was improved through this project to support protected species such as Little and Fairy Terns.
This project will monitor water quality across the Gippsland Lakes.
Three water quality stations were installed in 2025 at priority sites across the Gippsland Lakes including Lake Coleman, Clydebank Morass and Jones Bay. Electrical conductivity was also added to an existing water quality station at Loch Sport.

This project protects seagrass meadows across the Gippsland Lakes.
East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority will work with regional partners to protect priority areas of seagrass across the Gippsland Lakes. This will also include assessments and ground truthing of current seagrass communities.
Understanding saltmarsh condition in the Gippsland Lakes.
An engaged consultant will undertake saltmarsh condition monitoring within the Gippsland Lakes Ramsar Site. Surveys will contribute to the prioritisation of sites for protection works.
