It’s been all go out at Flannagan Island as the Trust for Nature team continue weed control, bird monitoring and habitat restoration on the 77 hectare, privately owned island.
Protected by a conservation covenant, the islands native plants and wildlife are recovering well after years of effort to remove threats such as weeds and goats to allow the island to regenerate.
The team has also been planting and protecting the existing natural revegetation. “The natural regeneration over the past few wet years has been amazing!” said Catherine Crowden, Area Manager, South East Area at Trust for Nature.
The island’s southern side boasts seven kilometres of sheltered coast and seagrass beds. The project also includes seasonal bird surveys with BirdLife Australia to provide baseline data for future monitoring.
