Wellington Shire Council is putting the finishing touches on projects to protect the Lakes’ saltmarsh and enhance freshwater wetlands by creating new frog habitat.
Works are contributing to protecting and enhancing habitat across three priority sites around the Lakes which are managed by Wellington Shire – Seacombe Landing, Hollands Landing and Flooding Creek.
At Flooding Creek near Sale, the team has been hard at work restoring and transforming the freshwater wetland into what is hoped will become habitat for threatened frogs – especially the Growling Grass Frog. Planting over 500 plants and the installation of habitat logs has been completed at the site.
At Hollands Landing site works including the installation of rock borders and planting to protect and restore saltmarsh – a habitat of great ecological importance for the Lakes.
Seacombe Landing on the straits of Hollands Landing, has seen the team plant thousands of plants over 1.7 hectares and they will infill with over 900 more plants as the water retreats from flooding. The reserve protects the edge of the Lake acting as a barrier into Hollands Landing and is a special habitat and refuge area.
