Conserving Flannigan Island forever

This Traditional Owner project integrates cultural and environmental values to build a clearer picture of the Lakes’ biodiversity and health.

About the project

This freehold Flannigan Island is protected under a conservation covenant with Trust for Nature and is a significant haven for birds including Borun (pelicans) and special plants.

This project will:

  • Conduct seasonal bird surveys with BirdLife Australia to provide baseline data for future monitoring.
  • Target Boxthorn (weed) control across the island and monitor and control any emerging weeds.
  • Develop a Revegetation Strategy for the island and implement the first stage of planting.
  • Set up permanent vegetation monitoring points.
  • Identify key threats to the Island’s flora and fauna.
