About the project

This project will implement activities to continue the shoreline erosion trial at Lake Wellington which contribute to the ongoing protection of fringing wetlands, cultural heritage sites, water quality and threatened vegetation communities.

The shoreline of Lake Wellington has been impacted by increasing salinity and wave action, contributing to the loss of reed beds, resulting in nutrient input through shoreline erosion. This process has risks to water quality within the Gippsland Lakes and the continual loss of submerged vegetation within Lake Wellington.

In 2024, West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority (WGCMA) established 3 trial structures on the north shoreline of Lake Wellington. Through this project, WGCMA will work to undertake follow up site assessments of established structures to assess success, and plan for its broader application across the Gippsland Lakes system.

The WGCMA will be the lead agency for this project and will work in partnership with GLaWAC, Greening Australia, Parks Victoria, Wellington Shire and the Strathfieldsaye Committee of Management.
