Protecting precious plants

This project will protect and enhance habitat for rare and threatened plants including the metallic sun orchid.

About the project

This project will manage and monitor threatened flora at Blond Bay State Game Reserve, Sale Common, Saplings Morass and covenanted properties around the Gippsland Lakes and will improve understanding and management actions.

Works will protect threatened flora species and maintain the biodiversity values including significant coastal saltmarsh communities and four nationally threatened species:

  • Dwarf kerrawang (Commersonia prostrata)
  • Swamp everlasting (Xerochrysum palustre)
  • Metallic sun orchid (Thelymitra epipactoides)
  • Swamp wallaby-grass (Amphibromus fluitans)

This project will plan for their protection by:

  • Controlling access and threats such as weeds.
  • Fencing and revegetating areas.
  • Propagating and translocating dwarf kerrawang.
