This project will increase the protection and enhancement of priority wetlands that fringe Lake Wellington and are on the Latrobe/Thomson and/or Avon/Perry floodplains, providing refuge areas for wetland dependent species.

About the project

This project will deliver on-ground works to protect and enhance priority wetland sites that fringe Lake Wellington and are situated on the lower Latrobe/Thomson and/or Avon/Perry floodplains.

The preservation and enhancement of freshwater wetlands is a high priority, particularly in response to climate change, rising sea levels and salinity in the wetlands fringing the Gippsland Lakes. Planning for, protecting and increasing available freshwater habitat is essential for dependant species to move and seek refuge within the landscape.

West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority will lead the delivery of the project in collaboration with Trust for Nature and Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Corporation (GLaWAC). On-ground works will be delivered by GLaWAC’s NRM Crew and/or contractors to WGCMA and Trust for Nature.
