About the project

This project will improve our understanding of the current levels of toxicants within the Lakes system through the collection and analysis of sediment, water and fauna samples across the Gippsland Lakes. Understanding levels of toxicants and sediments present in the Gippsland Lakes is an essential management strategy in the 2024 Gippsland Lakes Ramsar Site Management Plan.

Samples will be collected at seven sites across the Gippsland Lakes over four seasonal survey periods. Sites will include Latrobe River (near Sale), Lake Wellington (Avon River), Lake Victoria (Hollands Landing), Point Turner (Lake Victoria), Mitchell River (Mouth), Lake King (Tambo Bluff) and Yellow Bay.

Marine Mammal Foundation (MMF) will work with Deakin University to analyse samples collected in the field to determine levels of PFAS compounds and non-essential trace metals (ie: mercury, zinc, arsenic, selenium).

The Marine Mammal Foundation will work in partnership with Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation NRM Crew, providing opportunities to be involved in on water surveys and sampling.

Additionally, MMF will engage the community through a series of seminars to foster connection and awareness of the Gippsland Lakes and Burrunan Dolphin population.
