Reducing nutrients in the Crooke Street Wetlands
About the project
What happens to the water in an urban street in Bairnsdale has an impact as it flows into the nearby Gippsland Lakes.
This project will transform an urban drain into an artificial wetland that will support stormwater management in East Bairnsdale. It will use Water Sensitive Urban Design principles to help regulate stormwater flows and will:
- Reduce the input of 100% of gross pollutants and 100% suspended solids within the catchment basin currently discharging into Jones Bay.
- Reduce 81% of Phosphorous discharge into Jones Bay from the development area.
- Provide biofiltering benefits for stormwater currently discharging into Jones Bay.
- Involve the community to share the benefits of wetlands and invite them to help monitor the habitat and biodiversity benefits that constructed wetlands offer.
- Utilise GLaWAC to revegetate and landscape the site.
